Toronto Condos have been spending 1 percent of the gross cost of their development towards Public Art such as parks, art and community centres.
These benefits to the public are required by the City of Toronto under a public art policy in place since 1986.
Providing these benefits are a requirement of the approval for the development application. The entire process falls under Section 37 of The Ontario Planning Act.
Various Toronto Real Estate developers like Tridel, Cityscape, Malibu Investments and Edilcan Development Corp have all committed to artwork for their respective Condos.
Some like the Met Condos and Townhouse on Carlton Street are a little hard to find. The artwork here is a 40 foot Led lit walkway that connects the Condos at 21 Carlton with the Townhouses on Granby
The Public Art on Granby is difficult to find at the rear of the Condo project in comparison to all the vehicle and pedestrian travel just east of Yonge and Carlton.
Even harder to find will be the Public Art displayed by the yet to built Trump Tower. On completion one of two murals costing $2 million is to be displayed on the Parking ramp giving pedestrians just a glimpse of more Toronto Art as they hurry by.
Maybe we all have to slow down and start to appreciate millions of dollars of Toronto Public Art.
